Thanet OFTO

100 x 3MW offshore substation platform, subsea transmission lines and an onshore substation

In July 2010, Balfour Beatty was appointed preferred bidder for the transmission assets of the Thanet offshore wind farm as part of the OFTO regulatory regime. The 300MW wind farm is located off the east coast of Kent,  South East England, and consists of 100 3MW wind turbines that connects to an offshore substation platform (“OSP”). From this OSP, electricity, generated by the wind turbines, will be transported via two 25km subsea cables to the onshore station at Richborough.

The developer of the wind farm and the associated transmission assets is Thanet Offshore Wind Limited, a subsidiary of Vattenfall. The transmission assets to be transferred to the Thanet OFTO on financial close include the offshore substation platform, the two subsea transmission cables and the onshore substation. The project will be 100% owned by Balfour Beatty and, together with Greater Gabbard, represents the first investments in the regulatory sector.

Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions will be responsible for the management and coordination of all O&M activities.
