Regeneration and new build of 13 schools across the London Borough

Balfour Beatty was awarded the contract to deliver 13 secondary schools and one Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Islington, UK through Building Schools for the Future (BSF).

The Islington Managed Learning Environment (MLE) will be used to encourage young people to lead a healthy lifestyle by rewarding healthy eating reported by the cashless vending facilities. Portal technology will also be used to provide health and wellness information to target audiences, and the MLE will facilitiate access to the student's work from home, hospital or care home if they are ill and unable to attend school.

Using industry-leading security and filtering technologies, the Islington ICT (Information Communications Technology) Managed Service will ensure that children enjoy the benefits of the internet without fear of inappropriate content. CCTV systems will further ensure that young people are safe from crime and anti-social conduct. Skilled teachers using state-of-the-art ICT in flexible buildings will help make learning more motivating through the use of award winning curriculum software.  Improved ICT skills will accelerate progress and help more young people leave Islington's schools with the qualifications necessary for employment or further and higher education.

The Islington MLE will also help engage parents, encouraging increased involvement in their child's learning and development. In addition, children will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of their peers through online mentoring and collaboration that will extend to students from other schools in Islington, the UK and across the world.
