Blackburn with Darwen BSF

Delivering local economic benefit in Blackburn, UK

The project, awarded in 2009, includes the construction of eight schools, two ICT only schools, one Pupil Referral Unit, one Special Education Needs school, and 12 Bolton ICT only schools, in Blackburn with Darwen, UK.

Welcoming and open spaces are provided throughout the state-of-the-art schools. This inclusive design reduces feelings of being constrained within a space and encourages pupils and staff to engage with each other and their environment. The schools are not just available to students and young people, but are open to the whole community with leisure and learning, sports and ICT provision.

As part of Balfour Beatty’s commitment to the local community, we have pledged to target between 40% and 60% local employment at the schools and to engage local businesses as part of the supply chain. Balfour Beatty is also investing in the education and skills base of the local area with more than 13,000 apprenticeship weeks offered to local residents and employers, as well as mentoring and work placements.

The project will offer over 13,230 (indicative) apprenticeship weeks to local residents and employers, in addition to monitoring and work placements, ensuring a lasting skills legacy for the local area.
