University officials, city representatives, and the Balfour Beatty development team gathered on Thursday April 13 to commemorate the completion and occupancy of the first phase of Northside, a 595-bed residential and retail mixed-use project adjacent to the University of Texas at Dallas. The project provides a vibrant living, dining, and shopping hub on the edge of campus that is pedestrian friendly and also encourages interaction with the local community.
Bob Shepko, division president of Balfour Beatty Campus Solutions spoke at the event on behalf of the Balfour Beatty team who acted as both co-developer and operations and maintenance provider for the project. Joining Bob in addressing the faculty, staff, students, and community members in attendance were: Dr. Calvin Jamison, UTD vice president for administration, Dr. Richard Benson, UTD president, Dr. Hobson Wildenthal, UTD executive vice president, Paul Voelker, Richardson city mayor, Clyde Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Wynne/Jackson, Inc. (development partner), and JW Van Der Schans, UTD incoming student government president and Northside resident.
The ribbon cutting ceremony was immediately followed by a groundbreaking ceremony to launch the second phase of the project that will add 900 more beds and increase the amount of retail and restaurant offerings in July 2018.
Guests got to view the completed project and enjoy food and giveaways from the retail stores and restaurants that occupy the buildings including: Jimmy Johns, Delish Bubble Tea, Chopped Halal Grill, American Tap Room, Northside Drafthouse and Eatery, and Synergy Wesley Foundation.
The festivities were held in the central corridor of the project which was designed for exactly that - a community gathering, block party or street festival. We are looking forward to many more celebrations here for years to come.
